Vintage Ovation Guitars
If you really enjoy vintage guitars, one type that you may be interested in is vintage Ovation guitars. These guitars have a different type of history than many other types of guitars. The maker of these guitars, Charles Kaman really didn’t start out wanting to build guitars. He actually build helicopters for the military when he started up his corporation, but as helicopters were decreasing in demand, he realized that he needed to find some other type of business.
When he was young, Kamam had enjoyed playing the guitar. While he never went beyond having a hobby, he did enjoy music and even when he was making helicopters, he still had guitars in his office so he could play when he wanted to. When one of the guitars cracked, he went to have it repaired. He ended up getting a tour of the Martin factory, and he begin to think that he could use his skills to make guitars. So, he decided to go to work on developing vintage Ovation guitars.
It was not until 1966 that the production of these vintage Ovation guitars began. Charlie Byrd, a jazz legend, was the first person that Kaman when to, to show off his new guitars. Byrd really loved the sound of these guitars, but the steel strings were not really favored by Byrd. Later Kaman would come up with a guitar that was classic in style, which Byrd went on to use when he was performing.
One of the first performers out there to actually endorse the vintage Ovation guitars was Josh White, who was a folk singer. He ended up loving the sound and started endorsing the guitars. Of course, it wasn’t until later that he would get a bigger endorsement, which came from Glen Campbell. Campbell ended up loving the guitar, enjoying the durability as well as the great sound.
There is definitely quite a rich history when it comes to vintage Ovation guitars. Although the history is a bit different than that of many other guitars, this history is definitely what sets these guitars apart from some of the other types of guitars that are out there today.
